Earth Hour is the world’s largest global environmental movement. Organised each year by WWF, Earth Hour encourages millions of people across the globe to unite and switch off their non-essential lights for an hour, showing that we collectively care about the future of our planet.
The Earth’s climate is changing: Temperatures are climbing, oceans are warming. Hong Kong is not immune to the effects of climate change – climate-related incidents are becoming more frequent, causing property damage and costing livelihoods. Though the impacts of climate change are vast and global in scope, the iconic action of turning off the lights for Earth Hour reminds us that, together, we can make small positive changes to restore our world.
To continue the momentum of the “Earth’s biggest hour” that began on 23 March, we invite you to continue creating positive change in your life by joining the WALK FOR THE EARTH campaign. Instead of driving or taking transportation, reduce your carbon footprint by committing to walking, running or cycling every day and keeping track of that distance.
Collectively, we want to travel the equivalent of the Earth’s circumference – 40,075 km. This will keep 10,800 kg of carbon out of the atmosphere, equivalent to:
- The CO2 absorbed every year by 469 TREES
- The CO2 saved by TURNING A LIGHT OFF FOR 4,692,000 HOURS
- The CO2 emitted by 72 HONG KONG-TAIPEI ROUND-TRIP FLIGHTS
- The CO2 used by CHARGING A MOBILE PHONE 1,107,000 TIMES
(Assume walking 40,075km instead of driving)
After you commit, inspire those around you to do the same, magnifying your impact and helping to shape a brighter future for our planet.
Together, let’s step up for a sustainable future and complete 40,075 km – a journey around our EARTH!
